• Librarianship of the Past and the Present. In this articie the author iooks to former times to discover the foundation of modern librarianship. Although we still have far to go Ín the fleld of in-formation technology, the author contends that without the bibliographical groundwork done by previous centuries' librarians, electronic information retrieval would not be as advanced as it is today. To support his contention the author describes the ancient library at Ebla in SyrÍa, gives an account of the bibliographical work of Konrad Gesner and ends by recounting aspects of former librarian of the British Library, Antonio PanizzÍ's work. The article begins by describing the Hbrary at Ebla. This library is the oldest known library in the world. It Ís interesting not only because of the large amount of cuneiform tablets which were found there but also because it gives us a good idea of what library services were like 4.500 years ago. The tablets were classified and shelved accordingly; the library was also a centre for scientifíc research. The SwÍss naturalist, Konrad Gesner, has been called the fírst modern bibliographer. His bibliography, Bibliotheca univer-salis, is renowned throughout the library world. His solutions to various bibliographic problems are still considered useful in many ways. Antonio Panizzi reorganised the British Library turning it into the great library it is today. Librarianship has a glorious past and can certainly look forward to a glorious future.
