- "Roxanna Waterson's The Living House, originally published in 1990, is a pioneering study of the house within the social and symbolic worlds of South-east Asian peoples. Although primarily a work of anthropology, this is also a study of vernacular architecture, an until recently neglected area of research. As such, this book will be of interest to architects, designers, anthropologists and scholars specialising in South-east Asia. The central theme of the book is that kinship systems of island South-east Asia can be re-analysed as house-focused systems. Waterson had been studying the Sa' dan Toraja people of highland South-west Sulawesi and became interested in the role of houses within their kinship system. In pursuing this research further, Waterson decided to examine how the house is central to an understanding of how social relations are organised. Although the main focus of enquiry is Indonesia, Waterson's research takes us as far afield as Madagascar, Japan and Oceania. Waterson successfully presents a very vivid and interesting picture of how people shape buildings and buildings shape people, as rules about layout and uses of space have an impact on social relationships, revealing new insights into kinship systems. The book concludes with a consideration of how changes of the present day affect the fate of indigenous architecture. This book has been excellently researched and draws on sources of information from both architects and anthropologists. It is very well illustrated with some 200 photographs, both old and new. Its re-publication is likely to be welcomed by scholars and librarians, in particular those with an interest in vernacular architecture and building collections in this area."
